I just received this photo from Robyn, one of my Etsy clients. She ordered the Camilla cathedral length veil (see more about cathedral length veils here) and looks absolutely beautiful. Thanks Robyn, it was so lovely to work with you!

Carolee's Classic, Vintage Wedding

I stumbled upon Carolee's wedding photos a few weeks ago and I absolutely fell in love. Not only are they a gorgeous couple, but the thought and creativity put into every detail of her wedding day look is noteworthy.

Carolee successfully broke out of the Utah bride mold with her classic, 1950's style tea dress. She designed it herself, and it was made by a good friend. She effortlessly accomplishes the difficult task of a modest dress that is different from all the others.

Lovely, bright, autumn flowers, and an entirely unique venue for her reception (on the UVU campus).

The birdcage veil was also a collaborative effort between Carolee and her seamstress friend.

Congratulations Carolee! It was lovely meeting you.

Nancy and Ben Hoover

Lovely girl, lovely wedding, lovely photographs. I'll let them speak for themselves.

In addition to the veil, I also made the feather flower in her hair. These will be listed soon in the etsy shop, after a *very* exciting upcoming photo shoot (more to come on that in a bit).

Rebecca's Veil

Rebecca contacted me and asked me to help her choose a veil for her big day. She is getting married on August 30 (coming up quick!), and is debating whether or not to wear a veil. Despite all the really beautiful veils out there, there is a strong trend toward not wearing one. Discarding the veil is chic and modern, and throws to the wind the traditional symbolism of the bashful bride, veiled and subdued. However, Rebecca is having a traditional Jewish ceremony, and the veil is an integral part of it.

Rebecca's dress is incredible. She chose the Silk Tricotine Goddess Gown from JCrew. Ever since I was a teenager I have loved the JCrew bridal line. They offer unbelievably timeless dresses that are soft, simple, and gracious (and ridiculously affordable!), but sadly JCrew is so often overlooked for the satin princess gown at the bridal boutique. I am so happy with Rebecca's choice!

She has chosen this gorgeous side chignon for her hair, and I love it.

While I think she could totally pull off a birdcage veil...

...there is the predicament of needing to veil the face during the ceremony. To compliment the dress, I would recommend an elbow length, drop style veil , like below.

To veil the face, the veil needs to have 2 tiers. If you are wearing a gathered veil, the result is a little poofier than Rebecca would probably prefer. The drop veil perfectly addresses this problem because it has no or few gathers around the comb. I would recommend an elbow length because it is simple and clean, and allows her dress to be the focal point of the ensemble. For a girl who isn't into the big veil look, this is perfect.

I am loving this style of veil right now. I think it is so simple and elegant, and perfect for a simple, clean dress like Rebecca's. The drop veil is a large circle of tulle with a comb in the center. It doesn't have any gathers so it completely avoids the poof. It drapes over the face so elegantly. I think it will be perfect for Rebecca's ceremony.


Rebecca is interested in wearing a flower, and I love this image of the flower under the veil. This bride also has a side-chignon, and I think it is lovlely.

Because Rebecca is not so sure about the veiled look, I would recommend that she take the veil off after the ceremony and spend the rest of her wedding day without it. She can keep the flower in her hair and still look absolutely stunning.

This is New York Magazine writer Joanna Goddard (she's also wearing a JCrew dress for her wedding), and she has chosen a similar hairstyle. I love the braid, I think it is so pretty and soft.

I think Rebecca will have a lovely evening at her reception without a veil in her way.

Nancy's Mantilla Veil

We all love real weddings. And, as an etsy crafts-person, I love the creative process. Part of what I would like to do on this blog is share my creative process with you. I've been emailing with Nancy, a bride in San Luis Obispo, California, Who has a gorgeous wedding planned in September. Her colors are eggplant, gold, and ivory, and she's getting married in a lovely Spanish Mission. Nancy told me she like elbow length veils. She had tried on several in the bridal shop, and found them flattering with the dress style.

After seeing the dress....

A lovely antique gold mermaid gown with a gorgeous French Alencon lace panel circling the waist...

...I recommended two styles of veils. The first is a drop veil. The drop veil is a large circle of tulle with no gathers. It is elegant and looks amazing when draped over the face.

But ultimately Nancy chose my second recommendation: The Mantilla veil. The mantilla is Spanish in origin, and was so appropriate for her ceremony in the Spanish mission. The trademarks of the mantilla are the extravagant lace trim border, it has no gathers, and is attached at the crown of the head. It will look gorgeous with her dress, and is perfect for her venue.

We loved this embellishment with the flower underneath the veil. She will be able to wear the flower during her reception without the veil getting in her way.

We stayed with Nancy's original hope for an elbow length veil, like this one pictured. I think it will be perfect.

The lace is absolutely beautiful. It is an elegant rose scallop trim. It will have the perfect drape and add a nice amount of weight to the veil. It is floral without being too cutesy, and is ivory French Alencon to match the panel on the waist of her dress.

I'm so excited to do this veil for Nancy. I know she is going to have incredible photographs, and I can't wait to post some in the Fall. In the mean time, I will post pictures of her veil up close as it gets finished.

Emily's Veil

Emily in Salt Lake City asked me to do her veil for her. She chose a natural white tulle with a satin cord edge. It is 38" long, the perfect fingertip length, and has 2 tiers. It is a simple and beautiful veil that will compliment almost any dress style. 

I found a 5" metal comb for this veil. Normally, I would have chosen a 3" comb, but I really loved this metal one. It is classy and makes for a really modern look. 

The veil was cut to be 54" wide. When gathered, it provides a modest amount of poof, and completely avoids the "pouf pompadour" look of the 1980's. It is so modern and clean. I was so happy with it. 

The satin cord is my favorite edge. It is simple and clean, and provides a just the right amount of body for the veil so that it stays lively and beautiful throughout the wedding day.  The satin cord compliments any satin dress, and comes in 1mm and 2mm widths. I used 1mm for Emily's veil.
