My adorable friend Katie (we were dancers together in high school) and her handsome-as-anything husband Kevin have an amazing wedding photography business. They travel the world to photograph the most amazing destination weddings (hello, Paris?). I see a lot *a LOT* of wedding photography, and they rank among the best. They have this innate ability to capture the personality of the couple, and all the small details that they have put into their wedding day.

I thought this wedding was particularly special. The couple strikes me as happy and down to earth, even on their wedding day. I think its the groom's custom Tom's.

Several weeks ago I was contacted by Melissa Niu, a Boise photographer. She asked me to collaborate with her on a few upcoming photo shoots. One was this adorable product shoot for a sweet little clothing company Small Beans. It was Melissa's idea to make the birdcage veil for the little girl. I think it is absolutely adorable.

Cinnamon Sugar Marshmallows

I have always wondered what a homemade marshmallow tastes like. What the difference is between those nasty, sticky blobs that come in bags at the store, and these gigantic lovely cubes. So when I saw Have It Sweet Confections on the Etsy front page, and their marshmallow sampler, I ordered it to see for myself. I must proclaim, I am completely smitten.

Marshmallow Sampler

The sampler came with Heavenly Vanilla, Double Cocoa Swirl, Lemon Meringue Pie, and Sugar Cookie marshmallows. The texture is more dense than store-bought marshmallows. They are sweet, as they should be, but have more flavor than the others. And the shape is so darn cute.

Just A Little Taste Carmel Sampler

The thing that struck me first was how prettily they were wrapped and packed. They came in the prettiest gold wax paper bags, with 4 marshmallow to a bag. I though how lovely and thoughtful they would be as favors for guests at a wedding. Maybe tied with a custom colored ribbon to match.

Chasity's Veil Emergency

Chasity contacted me last week with quite a dilemma. Her wedding is February 20th, and the dress shop where she had ordered her birdcage veil (and paid a fortune for) closed down without giving her the veil or her money back. Can you imagine? For just one moment, try to comprehend this girl's situation ....

Okay. She contacted me and I was up for the challenge of helping her in a time crunch. She sent me a picture of her dress - an absolutely gorgeous strapless dress. The skirt blows me away. The detailing is phenomenal...

She was in love with the short veil from the last post, and wanted a bit of volume on top for a very classic bride look. I used the short veil as inspiration, and designed a two-tiered veil that is about shoulder-blade length - somewhere between shoulder and elbow length. The length is perfect for her dress because it will overlap the back by a few inches creating a lovely proportion. The volume on the top is very classic, and combined with the length it has an adorable 1950's feel. It is just wide enough to create the perfect amount of poof. It is light and airy, classic vintage, and definitely not 1980's era poof pompadour. I am so pleased.

Here are a few photos Chasity took herself. Lovely as they are, I can't wait to see a few photographs from her wedding next week. I'm so excited to add this veil to my spring line.

I've had the great fortune to work with Tracey Taylor and Blackburn Studios. These people have made my little project into something incredible. Without their collaborative efforts I wouldn't have these gorgeous images.

Tracey is getting married (yes, I'm doing her veil). She wanted to do a budoir shoot before the wedding. Its a fabulous way to get dressed up and feel special and pretty. I was thrilled to design a few special pieces for the occasion. I am so happy with the photographs! I can't wait to list a few of these items in the etsy shop. Holy cow, this girl is talented!

Long Dress, Short Veil.

I love this simple, short veil with a long, classic dress! I think a lot of girls think if they wear a traditional dress that they need to wear a traditional veil -either cathedral or fingertip length. I love the simplicity of this airy, short veil. Its just so pretty! It still feels traditional, sort of 1950's vintage, but really you don't see this combination very often.

I adore this dress. The back is stunning, I love the buttons, and the sash is beautifully simple.

I seriously need a minute to take in the array of color found at my friend C's wedding. She and her fiance "V" chose to hold a traditional ceremony at V's family home in Vishakhapatnam, India.

"It was pretty wild. I didn't really get much say in anything. I had about 10 of [my husband's] female relatives just putting stuff on me and telling me what to do. They were all very sweet. It was quite an experience. The earrings were so heavy they made my ears bleed... Our pic even got put in the newspaper here. xo"

I think it's absolutely stunning.

"Making of the Bride" ceremony. Beautiful C in her first of her 4 sarees of the weekend. After this ceremony, she wasn't supposed to see V or be seen outside of the home. Same went for V but his "Making of the Groom" ceremony was held at his parent's home.

Carolee's Classic, Vintage Wedding

I stumbled upon Carolee's wedding photos a few weeks ago and I absolutely fell in love. Not only are they a gorgeous couple, but the thought and creativity put into every detail of her wedding day look is noteworthy.

Carolee successfully broke out of the Utah bride mold with her classic, 1950's style tea dress. She designed it herself, and it was made by a good friend. She effortlessly accomplishes the difficult task of a modest dress that is different from all the others.

Lovely, bright, autumn flowers, and an entirely unique venue for her reception (on the UVU campus).

The birdcage veil was also a collaborative effort between Carolee and her seamstress friend.

Congratulations Carolee! It was lovely meeting you.

I made a few ring books several months ago. I thought they were smart, quaint, and quite pretty. I listed them, and they both sold within days to wonderfully unique brides who appreciate detail (and literature).

I received an email today that this ring book was featured in the ReadyMade blog. Lindsey's wedding was featured as a simple wedding that is centered around family and each other. Lindsey says, "I knew right off the bat there would be no tuxedos involved. I really wanted the feeling to be sophisticated, yet casual. Both Todd and I are pretty laid back, and I think we wanted the wedding to reflect that." If you don't know ReadyMade, you live in a box. It is a hip design magazine centered around DIY and urban living. Its a big deal. Seriously.

In the article, they chose to show my book as "the perfect etsy find"! Quite flattering, I must say.

The books will be back in shop. I promise. Thanks to Emily for finding this particular beauty at Weller's Books in Salt Lake City.

I will be showing at Tom and Lucy's Art Boutique on November 19th - 21st. I've been browsing through their vendors, and I'm very excited to be among them. The vendors are very talented, and the items for sale are unique and tasteful. I'm very impressed with what I have seen so far, and I can't wait for the show. My friend who goes by "Tuffy" had her engagement photos taken at the beautiful Salt Lake City Library. I love the aesthetic of her photos. I think these alternative ring pillows would be *so* adorable as a proposal idea for anyone interested in having their photos done at the city library.

The outdoor wedding was immaculate, the weather was perfect. Tuffy's dress was a simple, fitted strapless gown with a gorgeous lace overlay. She chose a fascinator instead of a veil to keep the outdoor, clean, breezy energy as part of her overall look...

Craft Lake City

On Saturday I was in the Craft Lake City show at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City. I've never done anything like this, so I had very little in the way of expectations. I thought it would be a fun experience, and an opportunity to receive feedback about my work.

I thought long and hard about the table, and searched all over for fabric. I really wanted my table to feel pulled together. The fabric needed to be elegant and modern with an edge of "hipness" (like I try to convey my bridal pieces) (using that word is so not hip). I settled on this great grey print from Ikea. I thought it would be clean and modern while not overwhelming the pieces themselves. I also love grey, so when I saw it I knew it was perfect.

I bought black picture frames, and painted a few black, and put fabrics and papers inside, including a coordinating dandelion silhouette print that matches the runner. I've been totally inspired by {black. white. yellow.}, so I knew I wanted yellow flowers in my white vase. Sunflowers hold up really well in the heat, and were a good juxtaposition in contrast with the clean lines of the table.

The rice in the vases held the headbands nicely. I couldn't think of any other way to get them to say put. And this turned out to be really nice.

All put together, the table looked great. I got a lot of compliments on the spread, and lots of compliments on the hair pieces. While I didn't sell any bridal pieces (I didn't really expect to. Who looks for their wedding attire at a craft fair?), I sold about half of the headbands and clippies that I had brought with me. I made a lot of good connections with other bloggers, wedding planners, a ballet studio, and people who organize other fairs that would like me to come do their shows. I was busy through most of the day (it slowed down quite a bit at dinnertime), and I would definitely do it again next year now that I know what to expect.

All of the headbands I didn't sell will be listed on etsy in the coming week or two as I find time to get them posted. I wish I had great photographs of each of them!

Rebecca's Veil

Rebecca contacted me and asked me to help her choose a veil for her big day. She is getting married on August 30 (coming up quick!), and is debating whether or not to wear a veil. Despite all the really beautiful veils out there, there is a strong trend toward not wearing one. Discarding the veil is chic and modern, and throws to the wind the traditional symbolism of the bashful bride, veiled and subdued. However, Rebecca is having a traditional Jewish ceremony, and the veil is an integral part of it.

Rebecca's dress is incredible. She chose the Silk Tricotine Goddess Gown from JCrew. Ever since I was a teenager I have loved the JCrew bridal line. They offer unbelievably timeless dresses that are soft, simple, and gracious (and ridiculously affordable!), but sadly JCrew is so often overlooked for the satin princess gown at the bridal boutique. I am so happy with Rebecca's choice!

She has chosen this gorgeous side chignon for her hair, and I love it.

While I think she could totally pull off a birdcage veil...

...there is the predicament of needing to veil the face during the ceremony. To compliment the dress, I would recommend an elbow length, drop style veil , like below.

To veil the face, the veil needs to have 2 tiers. If you are wearing a gathered veil, the result is a little poofier than Rebecca would probably prefer. The drop veil perfectly addresses this problem because it has no or few gathers around the comb. I would recommend an elbow length because it is simple and clean, and allows her dress to be the focal point of the ensemble. For a girl who isn't into the big veil look, this is perfect.

I am loving this style of veil right now. I think it is so simple and elegant, and perfect for a simple, clean dress like Rebecca's. The drop veil is a large circle of tulle with a comb in the center. It doesn't have any gathers so it completely avoids the poof. It drapes over the face so elegantly. I think it will be perfect for Rebecca's ceremony.

Rebecca is interested in wearing a flower, and I love this image of the flower under the veil. This bride also has a side-chignon, and I think it is lovlely.

Because Rebecca is not so sure about the veiled look, I would recommend that she take the veil off after the ceremony and spend the rest of her wedding day without it. She can keep the flower in her hair and still look absolutely stunning.

This is New York Magazine writer Joanna Goddard (she's also wearing a JCrew dress for her wedding), and she has chosen a similar hairstyle. I love the braid, I think it is so pretty and soft.

I think Rebecca will have a lovely evening at her reception without a veil in her way.

Nancy's Mantilla Veil

We all love real weddings. And, as an etsy crafts-person, I love the creative process. Part of what I would like to do on this blog is share my creative process with you. I've been emailing with Nancy, a bride in San Luis Obispo, California, Who has a gorgeous wedding planned in September. Her colors are eggplant, gold, and ivory, and she's getting married in a lovely Spanish Mission. Nancy told me she like elbow length veils. She had tried on several in the bridal shop, and found them flattering with the dress style.

After seeing the dress....

A lovely antique gold mermaid gown with a gorgeous French Alencon lace panel circling the waist...

...I recommended two styles of veils. The first is a drop veil. The drop veil is a large circle of tulle with no gathers. It is elegant and looks amazing when draped over the face.

But ultimately Nancy chose my second recommendation: The Mantilla veil. The mantilla is Spanish in origin, and was so appropriate for her ceremony in the Spanish mission. The trademarks of the mantilla are the extravagant lace trim border, it has no gathers, and is attached at the crown of the head. It will look gorgeous with her dress, and is perfect for her venue.

We loved this embellishment with the flower underneath the veil. She will be able to wear the flower during her reception without the veil getting in her way.

We stayed with Nancy's original hope for an elbow length veil, like this one pictured. I think it will be perfect.

The lace is absolutely beautiful. It is an elegant rose scallop trim. It will have the perfect drape and add a nice amount of weight to the veil. It is floral without being too cutesy, and is ivory French Alencon to match the panel on the waist of her dress.

I'm so excited to do this veil for Nancy. I know she is going to have incredible photographs, and I can't wait to post some in the Fall. In the mean time, I will post pictures of her veil up close as it gets finished.

I've been collecting fantastic images of birdcage veils for a while now, so this post is really more of a photo essay. Birdcage veils are becoming the go-to for fashion forward brides who want to be different, edgy, and classic all at the same time. Birdcage veils are able to be classic, old-hollywood and super modern chic at the same time. They look incredibly hip with a shorter dress, glamorous with a strapless gown, and gracious with a soft flirty dress. A fascinator (flower clip) is a must, and you can find so many fabulous designs on etsy with feathers and silk, avant garde or simple.

Now on to the fun part, The Photographs:

I have been completely in love with letterpress lately. There is something so appealing in the texture, the colors, and graphic quaintness of it all. This Friday, I am featuring Paper Stories Letterpress. These cards, from her Bittersweet collection, are probably not appropriate for a wedding blog, but I cannot resist a bit of pretty irony.

Luckily for us, she is also brilliant with custom wedding invitations, and they are just as pretty.

Choosing a Length: Part 6 - Shoulder Length

If you are looking for something truly unique, the shoulder length veil is a serious contender. The birdcage veil (post coming soon!) has become the go-to for hip brides, so much so that it is becoming uber trendy. The shoulder length veil is still a bit obscure, evoking 1950's era glamour and grace. Audrey Hepburn wore a should length veil in Funny Face. It is the perfect veil for a tea-length dress.

Again, so cute with a shorter dress here.

Sweet, elegant, and unique, this veil should not be overlooked.

I can't believe this dress I spotted over at Once Wed. The dress appears to be made of cotton lawn, a beautifully fine heirloom cotton, so light it is a bit translucent. The details are amazing: the vintage cut, the Mary Jane collar, the pintucks, the little bit of embroidery, the TURQOISE petticoat! I love, LOVE her pearls! And check out her alabaster skin.

Choosing a Length: Part 5 - Elbow

As we get shorter, the veils begin to add more personality and fun to a wedding look. Thus far, the veils we've talked about have been classic, beautiful options. Longer veils have a traditional feel, and add elegance to any gown. The Elbow length veil is just on the border of traditional and flirty, classic and cute.

The elbow length veil is perfect for a dress with a full skirt. It accentuates the waist, and avoids making the bride look like an elongated marshmallow drowning in white.

The elbow length veil can also sport a wider edge, like the one below, without feeling heavy or gaudy. Longer veils need to be simple to appear weightless, while an elbow length veil can have a bit more fun.

These photos are from Ashley Garmon Photography, and have been featured on Wedding Chicks. The bride's veil is her grandmother's, who brought it with her when she emigrated from the Netherlands. How absolutely delightful!

The veil is called a Mantilla veil, and is generally Spanish in design. This veil has such exquisite Dutch details. Take a second to enlarge the pictures and admire away.

The fingertip veil is the queen of tradition and versatility. It compliments any dress, and is a classic and beautiful staple for a bride. It can fall anywhere between the wrists and a few inches below the fingertips. Like the picture above, a fingertip length blusher creates a classic, traditional, and elegant veiled bride.

Emily's Veil

Emily in Salt Lake City asked me to do her veil for her. She chose a natural white tulle with a satin cord edge. It is 38" long, the perfect fingertip length, and has 2 tiers. It is a simple and beautiful veil that will compliment almost any dress style.

I found a 5" metal comb for this veil. Normally, I would have chosen a 3" comb, but I really loved this metal one. It is classy and makes for a really modern look.

The veil was cut to be 54" wide. When gathered, it provides a modest amount of poof, and completely avoids the "pouf pompadour" look of the 1980's. It is so modern and clean. I was so happy with it.

The satin cord is my favorite edge. It is simple and clean, and provides a just the right amount of body for the veil so that it stays lively and beautiful throughout the wedding day. The satin cord compliments any satin dress, and comes in 1mm and 2mm widths. I used 1mm for Emily's veil.

The Waltz length is also called a ballerina or walking veil. It falls anywhere between 40 and 58 inches, around the knee. This veil was very popular in the 1970's, during the victorian revival. It is still a classic, elegant choice, and a lovely compliment to an A-line or princess-seamed dress.

The cathedral length veil is stunning. As a general rule, the slimmer the dress, the longer the veil. Therefore the cathedral length veil is a gorgeous companion to a to strapless dress with a slim silhouette, a mermaid gown, or an elegant empire. The veil should be longer than the train to avoid looking like someone ran out of fabric. A simple, cut edge is recommended to keep the veil light and airy, and to avoid making the veil look heavy. Here are some stunning examples.

This post will begin a series of posts about choosing a length for your veil. As a general rule, the slimmer the dress, the longer the veil can be. But, of course, there are always exceptions.

Step one is to measure.

Measure from your head to the length where you want your veil to be. Think about where the comb will go in your hair. Up high at the top? Underneath a lovely chignon? This is where you should start your measurement.

When considering the length of your veil, think about the back of your dress. Are there details that you don't want to cover up? Embroidery or emblishment? This is an important consideration.

Once you have decided on a length, let us know so we can create something special for you.

I'm generally never impressed with wedding videos; however, I saw this bride's wedding video online and thought it was so beautifully done. The couple asked a few close friends to do all of the filming with rented Super 8 cameras. The results are sweet, intimate, and stunning--don't you think?

I realize this has nothing to do with the veils but I couldn't resist.

What is an heirloom?

In popular usage, an heirloom is something, perhaps an antique, that has been passed down for generations through family members. It is something of exceptional quality, and something that holds tremendous sentimental value. For brides, it may be something old, something new, something borrowed, (perhaps blue).
